2014 Breeders' Cup Results
All is quiet at Santa Anita Park after yet another stellar weekend of thoroughbred racing for the 2014 Breeders’ Cup. The racing was tremendous; both the dirt and oval tracks were excellent on Friday, October 31, as we saw Rosie Napravnik pilot Untapable to victory in what might be the last win of her career. She won the $2 million Breeders’ Cup Distaff. And after some overnight rain, conditions held firm on Saturday, November 1 for Bayern’s win at the $5 million Breeders’ Cup Classic.
It was a solid win for organizers at Santa Anita, too. Attendance was up four percent compared to 2013, with a crowd of 37,205 showing up for Friday’s races and 61,114 for Saturday. Betting handle was comparable to last year – the handle at the track dipped about six percent to $127.8 million, but there was also one fewer event on this year’s 13-race card.
We saw particular interest in the 2014 Breeders’ Cup Classic odds, thanks to the inclusion of the local star, California Chrome. The reigning Kentucky Derby and Preakness champion wasn’t the betting favorite; that honor went to Shared Belief at 5/2. But California Chrome did go off as the co-second favorite with Tonalist at 9/2. Betting in the win/place/show pool for the Classic was reportedly up by 27% from last year.
