This Week's Top Races
The $5M Breeders' Cup Classic (G1) is the biggest race in autumn. It's a 1 ¼ mile race for three-year-olds and up that anchors the Breeders' Cup World Championships. This year's race will take place on Saturday, November 1 at Santa Anita Park. A full field is expected, along with most of the Breeders' Cup Challenge winners for the Classic.
California Chrome, the Kentucky Derby and Preakness Stakes winner, will be an intriguing prospect come Saturday. After a string of undefeated starts that nearly won him the Triple Crown, California Chrome has started slowing down; he finished in sixth place in the Penn Derby (G2), which was his first post-Triple Crown race. Whether or not he can bounce back will be a big storyline for the Classic. Shared Belief won two challenge races and remains undefeated; his last race was a victory at Santa Anita Park in the Awesome Again Stakes (G1). Belmont Stakes winner Tonalist has proven he can go the distance, but whether he can keep up with older horses remains to be seen. Candy Boy and Bayern will also top the list of contenders.
