This Week's Top Races
The $500,000 Cigar Mile Handicap goes down at Aqueduct on Saturday; while on Sunday, Del Mar hosts the $300,000 Matriarch Stakes.
The Grade 1 Cigar Mile Handicap is open to 3-year-old horses willing to race 1 mile on a dirt track for a share of a $500,000 purse. Watch out for Asmussen’s Regally Ready, who’s won six of nine starts this year including the Big Bear Stakes and the More Than Ready Mile Stakes. Edward Plesa Jr.’s Itsmyluckyday is another hot contender, who placed second in this year’s Preakness Stakes and won the Woodward Stakes in August. These are just two of the many promising competitors set to hit the track this Saturday and we’ll just have to wait and see who comes out on top.
The $300,000 Matriarch Stakes will take place this Sunday at Del Mar. The grade 1 event will feature horses aged three and up racing 1 mile on turf. A potential frontrunner is Discreet Marq, best known for winning the 2013 Del Mar Oaks. The Clement-trainee has had a solid year so far, finishing in the money in all but two races. We’re excited to see if this horse has what it takes to make it into the winners circle on Sunday.
