This Week's Top Races
With the opening of the Churchill Downs' September stakes meet, the fall racing season is officially underway. The $200,000 Pocahontas Stakes (G2) and the $100,000 Iroquois Stakes (G3) for juveniles are both "Win and You're In" races for the Breeders' Cup. The winners will be offered automatic berths to the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies and the Juvenile, respectively. On top of that, both 1 1/16 mile races are also the first point races for the 2015 Kentucky Oaks and Kentucky Derby.
D. Wayne Lukas has a number of nominees for the Pocahontas, including Take Charge Brandi, who already has two graded-stakes races under her belt and would be one of the more experienced fillies in the race. Lady Zuzu just made her racing debut on August 8, finishing third in the maiden special weight at Saratoga. Lukas has Mr. Z pointed to the Iroquois; Mr. Z was a recent winner at Churchill Downs and was runner-up in the Saratoga Special Stakes (G2) in his most recent outing. Tapitsphere, trained by Steve Asmussen, is another intriguing nominee for the Iroquois. A son of Tapit, Tapitsphere broke his maiden at first asking and has a 2-1-0-0 record.
